What to Pack for China: A Printable Category Checklist (2026)
We built this packing list as a category checklist you can print and tick off, rather than another prose blog post, so the only thing left to decide is what fits your season and itinerary.

Power and connectivity
China runs on 220 volts with Type A and Type I plugs, so a universal adapter is the first thing to pack.
A lightweight power bank earns its place because you will lean on your phone for maps, payment and translation all day.
Mobile data matters more than Wi-Fi here, so sort an eSIM or local SIM before you land.
If you rely on Google Maps, Gmail or WhatsApp, remember they are blocked without a VPN, so pack that setup, not just the hardware.
Payments and documents
Alipay and WeChat Pay cover most payments in China, but linking a foreign card can fail, so carry some cash as a fallback.
Keep a paper and phone copy of your passport photo page and your visa or entry stamp.
Travel insurance details belong in your phone wallet and a screenshot, not only in an email you cannot open offline.
Health and comfort
A small mask helps on crowded metros and during winter smog days in northern cities.
Pack any prescription medicine in its original box, because some drugs need a doctor's note at customs.
Stomach remedies and a basic first-aid kit save a pharmacy trip when nothing is open late.
Indoor heating in winter is dry, so lip balm and moisturiser are worth the space.
By season
Summer in central and southern China is hot and humid, so breathable layers beat heavy jeans.
Winter in the north is heated but cold at the door, so a warm coat and indoor slippers help.
Shoulder seasons are the easiest to pack for, with fewer temperature extremes.
What not to bring
Skip the heavy guidebook, because the same information lives in apps you already use.
Leave banned items and excess cash at home, because airport scans are strict.
Do not bother with a pocket Wi-Fi rental if your phone already supports eSIM.
